Templar Steel Shield – Red Cross on White
Availability: 13 in stock
SKU: SCU-006The Order of the Temple was founded around 1120 in Jerusalem, when the French knight Hugh de Payns and a small group of companions pledged to protect pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land after the First Crusade. It became one of the most powerful military orders of the Middle Ages, until its dissolution in 1312. Around 1147, Pope Eugene III granted its knights the right to wear a red cross on their white habit, and from then on, the red cross on white became the most recognisable emblem of the Templars, a symbol of sacrifice and purity. This shield recreates that image on the elongated pointed arch typical of knights' shields of the period. According to the accompanying legend, a fabricated tale with no historical basis, it belonged to Brother Géraud de Clairmont, an early Templar and companion of Hugh de Payns, who supposedly used it during the siege of Antioch to protect his brothers under a hail of arrows; it was said that its red cross never faded. It is worth knowing that this siege (1097-1098) predates the founding of the Order, so the scene is part of the fiction.

The shield is made from a sheet of steel shaped into the characteristic ogival form, slightly curved to follow the contour of the body. The entire edge is reinforced with a brass rim secured with rivets, which gives the piece solidity and contrasts with the background. The red cross and white background are hand-painted, and a subtle crackle finish imitates paint cracked by time. A handle on the back allows it to be held or hung.
