Viking Type H/I Sword with Engraved Blade and Leather Scabbard
Availability: 7 in stock
SKU: ESP-022The sword was one of the most prestigious weapons in Viking society, and its possession was linked to warriors with the means to acquire and maintain such a weapon. This piece reproduces a type H/I sword according to the typology of the Norwegian researcher Jan Petersen: types H and I are closely related and are distinguished primarily by the size of the guard and the base of the pommel. Most of the surviving H/I swords come from the Birka burial mound in present-day Sweden and date from the early 9th to the mid-10th century.
The original used as a model was recovered in 1949 during the excavation of a double cremation burial mound. Its blade bore an "Ulfberht" mark on one side, associated with high-quality Frankish blades, and on the other a braided lattice pattern, which this replica reproduces with an acid etching. Traces of brass or copper found on the pommel indicate that the hilt may have been covered with that metal.
