The sword was the most prized weapon of the Viking Age warrior, an expensive object that signified its owner's rank and was often passed down through generations. Its straight, double-edged blade, with a wide central fuller that reduced weight without sacrificing strength, was designed primarily for cutting and was wielded with one hand alongside a round shield.

The five-lobed pommel of this piece is one of the most characteristic shapes of Viking hilts. Norse smiths employed various versions of the lobed pommel to denote the owner's status and personal taste, and they are generally considered to derive from Frankish designs that arrived in Scandinavia through trade and contact between the two worlds. Norwegian researcher Jan Petersen classified these hilts in the early 20th century into a typology that remains in use today.
