The round wooden shield was the basic defence of the Scandinavian warrior during the Viking Age (8th-11th centuries). It was made of joined planks, had a domed metal piece in the centre to protect the hand, and was often decorated with paint. This particular model represents Yggdrasil, the great world tree of Norse mythology. According to the Eddas, the medieval Icelandic texts that preserve these myths, it is an immense ash tree whose branches and roots connect the nine worlds, from the realm of the gods to the underworld. At its base, the gods gather each day, and beside it dwell the Norns, who weave fate. The tree appears in white, with its roots and branches transformed into interlacing patterns that encircle the shield. According to the legend accompanying the piece—a fabricated tale with no historical basis—the shield, called "Root of the Nine Worlds," was made for Jarl Sigvardr, who followed a raven in his dreams to a sacred clearing where Yggdrasil stood. In battle, his enemies' blows seemed to be stopped by an invisible force, and after his disappearance, only his shield was found, intact and leaning against an ancient oak tree.
