Miniature of a field cannon of the type used by Napoleon's troops around 1806. Its design is inspired by the Gribeauval system, the reform of French artillery promoted by General Jean-Baptiste Vaquette de Gribeauval starting in 1765: shorter and lighter pieces, standardized carriages, and interchangeable parts, which made the cannons much easier to move and repair in the field. Napoleon, who had trained as an artillery officer, inherited this system and made it one of the cornerstones of his victories, concentrating large batteries at the decisive point of the battle. French artillery of the time was considered the best in Europe, and the emperor himself is credited with the idea that great battles are won with artillery. In 1803, the so-called Year XI system introduced new pieces, which coexisted with Gribeauval's during the Napoleonic Wars.
