Miniature 18th-century British naval cannon, 28 cm

SKU: MCA-004In the 18th century, a navy's strength was measured by the number of cannons its ships could carry, and the British Royal Navy built its dominance of the seas upon them. Shipboard cannons were mounted on gun carriages: a stepped wooden block with four small wheels that allowed the gun to be aimed and withdrawn for reloading. When fired, the cannon recoiled violently, stopped by a thick rope, the breech, attached to the ship's side; using the pulley system, the gunners would raise it back to the gunport.
This 28 cm miniature, with a design inspired by the original, reproduces the black barrel with its moldings, the stepped wooden gun carriage with its four wheels, and the rope and pulley system.
