Medieval Type XIV Sword from the 13th Century with Garnet Leather Scabbard
Availability: 5 in stock
SKU: ESP-026The 13th century was a time of full consolidation of European chivalry, with one-handed swords like this one, with a straight, double-edged blade, designed for combat on foot and on horseback, alongside the shield. This replica is based on a 13th-century find of the 14th-century type, according to the classification of historian Ewart Oakeshott: a broad, flat blade that tapers to a sharp point, a profile that combined cutting power with thrusting ability, increasingly valued as the High Middle Ages progressed. Its name, "Gammelt Jern," means "old iron" in Norwegian.
The wheel pommel and the crossguard with curved quillons are characteristic features of knights' swords from this period. The scabbard reproduces the suspension system of the time, with the leather belt attached directly to the scabbard, a detail that, in addition to being practical, served to display the rank of the wearer.
