Medieval Combat Sword "William the Marshal" from the 12th Century
Availability: 16 in stock
SKU: ESP-028This replica is named after William the Marshal, one of the most celebrated knights of the entire European Middle Ages. Born around 1147, he served as a knight and advisor to several Plantagenet kings—Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, John Lackland, and Henry III—and earned a reputation as an undefeated champion in the tournaments of his youth. In his old age, he served as regent of England and even personally led the royal troops at the Battle of Lincoln (1217). His life was chronicled in an extensive verse biography commissioned by his son, one of the earliest known biographies of a non-royal figure in medieval Europe.
The single-fulled blade with a spring-like action and the rounded point are features of a model designed for mock combat and weapons training rather than thrusting, in keeping with the tournament life so characteristic of this knight. The title of marshal, one of the highest offices at court, belonged to the person who organized the military affairs and ceremonies of the kingdom.
