Japanese Iaitō Training Katana (Unsharpened)
Availability: 51 in stock
SKU: KAT-001Iaido (居合道) is a Japanese martial art focused on drawing, cutting, and sheathing the sword in a single, fluid, and controlled movement in response to a sudden attack. Its origins can be traced back to the iaijutsu practised by samurai during the Edo period (江戸時代, 1603-1868), and over time it became organised into different schools (流派, ryūha) that systematised its forms (型, kata) until it became the discipline taught today in dojos around the world. To train these movements without the risk of a sharp blade, the iaitō (居合刀) is used: a training katana without an edge that faithfully reproduces the weight, balance and dimensions of a real sword, so that the practitioner can repeat cuts and draws with the same feeling as they would have with a real blade, but safely.

This training katana is made of solid steel without a sharp edge or differential tempering, prioritising a weight and balance true to that of a real sword over cutting ability. The blade has a matte polish and a standard curve, and the tip is slightly rounded for safety. The black lacquered wooden handle (柄, tsuka) is wrapped with a black cord in a diamond pattern, without any further embellishment. The round, light-alloy guard (鍔, tsuba) with a simple engraved motif and the remaining metal parts are assembled before the whole is attached to the matte black lacquered wooden scabbard (鞘, saya), complete with its corresponding sageo cord.
- Iaitō (居合刀): an unsharpened training katana, not a decorative replica.
- 73 cm solid steel blade, without differential hardening or hamon (刃文).
- Weight and balance adjusted to reproduce the feel of a real sword.
- Black tsuka-ito (柄糸), diamond-wrapped; sober mounting without ornament.
- Round tsuba (鍔) in light alloy, of simple design.
