Jacobite Sword with Gilded Basket Hilt
Availability: 10 in stock
SKU: ESP-011The basket-guard sword was the characteristic weapon of officers and soldiers in the Scottish Highlands during the Jacobite risings of the 18th century, led by supporters of the Stuart dynasty who claimed the British throne. Its closed metal guard, pierced with trefoil motifs, protected the entire hand in close combat, while the straight, broad, double-edged blade (the Scottish "broadsword") allowed for both cutting and thrusting. This type of sword is particularly associated with the 1745 rising of Charles Edward Stuart ("the Young Pretender"), which culminated in the Jacobite defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
In addition to this real historical basis, this piece is presented with a fictional account linking it to Commander Fergus Ogilvie, who supposedly wielded it at the Battle of Culloden before hiding it in the Scottish Highlands. It is a fictional story created as part of the product's identity, without documentary basis, although set in a way that is consistent with the real historical context of the Jacobite wars.
