It is recognisable by its raised, diadem-like front and the cheek pieces that cover the sides of the face. It appears in reliefs and monuments of the Empire, although specialists debate whether it was actually used in combat or if it was an artistic convention to emphasise the wearer's dignity. The horsehair crest, with its long tail falling over the back, underscores the wearer's rank. Here it is presented in a highly decorative black finish.

The bowl is made of steel and has a glossy blackened finish. The front rises above the forehead with a stepped, embossed pattern, and two decorative discs are riveted to the sides. The cheek pieces hang from the bowl and are fastened under the chin with leather laces. A black horsehair crest is attached at the top, with a long lock falling down the back.
